Knee Pain Explained #AskUs - Knee Injury At Work - What Should I Do?

I had a severe fall at my work. I work with heights I walk on iron I fell approximately 4 to 6 ft and the inside of my knee slammed into an iron beam. Almost immediately I had a softball-size knot on the inside of my knee.

It's been a week now the softball size knot went down but you can see it is blatantly obvious the size difference from the non hurt leg to the hurt leg it is now swollen all the way down to my foot and the inside of my knee is black and blue and yellow all the way to the back and hard as a rock I had a laceration as well xray showed no broken bones.

I try to get up on it and walk on it but I'll get a sharp sharp pain in my in the front of my knee. When I sit down and don't mess with it I'm fine. I can walk on it for a little while but I walk with a limp cause I can't bend all the way.

But even the slightest touch to the impact area is very painful. I go to get up first thing in the morning and  I can't even stand on it. I elevate it, put ice on it, try to stand up  but I can't stand on it. I need any advice that I can get. Thank you.

Hi Joshua

I suggest you get it checked out by your doctor. It's good news that nothing was broken but they may be able to help some more.

In the meantime, I would recommend following RICE treatment - relative rest, regular ice, tubigrip compression bandage and elevation. These will help to reduce the swelling which is really important. When there is swelling in the knee it will be painful to move it and movement will be restricted so it's important to get the swelling down. Anti-inflammatories may help too - discuss that with your doctor.

Once the pain is under control I would suggest doing some gentle knee exercises.  Movement also helps to reduce the swelling and will keep the knee strong and stop it getting stiff.

They should really help, especially if you do them in the morning before you get up - should mean you get up and about easier. Hope that helps. Chloe
